11.9 Prevention

Prevention work refers to interventions designed to prevent violence against women from occurring and/or early interventions to prevent further harm being caused.  They can be divided into 3 sub-categories:

 
  • Primary prevention methods, for example education to change attitudes and perceptions
  • Secondary prevention, identifying particularly those at risk; for example pregnant women
  • Tertiary prevention, reducing the harm already caused together with rehabilitative programmes for perpetrators.
