8.4 The Police
This section looks at the Police procedures for identifying and managing risk in cases of domestic violence. This should also be read in conjunction with section 7.12 which looks at the police as an agency to support survivors and victims.
The police are guided by policies and procedures drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). Scrutiny of the police is provided by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). In addition, in London the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is monitored via the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) which acts as a scrutiny body. The Domestic Violence board of the MPA merged to form a domestic and sexual violence board in 2009 and its reports and discussions provide a comprehensive review of the policing of domestic (and sexual) violence in London.
